What the stars mean: how we grade every pair

Every pre-owned pair is inspected, cleaned and given a condition grade. This is what each number of stars tells you.

Every pair at Thrift Gallery is second-hand, and no two have been worn the same way. So rather than calling everything "good condition", we inspect each pair, clean it, and give it a grade. The grade shows on the listing as stars.

StarsGradeWhat it means
★★GoodWorn and it shows — creasing, scuffs or sole wear you will notice. Plenty of use left, at a lower price.
★★★ExcellentLight, even wear. Clean uppers and soles with lots of life in them. Most of our pairs sit here.
★★★★PremiumBarely worn. Close to new, with only small signs of use.
★★★★★Premium+As good as pre-owned gets — hard to tell from new.

The photos are the pair you get

We photograph each pair itself, from several angles, after it has been cleaned. Marks and scuffs are left in the photos, not edited out, so the grade and the pictures tell the same story. Look closely at the toe, the heel and the sole — that is where wear shows first.

What we check

  • Uppers — tears, deep creasing, stains and loose stitching.
  • Soles — how much tread is left and whether the wear is even.
  • Midsoles — cracks, yellowing and how much cushioning remains.
  • Inside — the lining, the insole and the heel counter.

Something about a pair not clear from the listing? Ask us before you order — we would rather answer a question than take a return.

Every pair in the shop is one of a kind — when it sells, it is gone.
